Clear Vinyl

The clear vinyl in this project is right at the tops of the silverware. It is easy to wipe clean. Also great for sewing ID wallets and waterproof pouches.

Plastic Snap Set with Pliers

These snaps are fun and easy to use. I love them for beginner projects instead of sewing buttons. Part of the fun is mixing and matching all the colors.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Fabric

Iron the fusible interfacing onto one piece of cotton fabric (contrast A) and one piece of cotton fabric (contrast B).

Step 2: Attach Clear Vinyl

Align the top edge of the vinyl with one piece of contrast A fabric. With right sides together, place the second piece of contrast A on top of the vinyl and sew across the edge.

Step 3: Sew Vinyl Seam

Open and fold the fabrics wrong sides together. The vinyl should sit at the top, with the seam between the two cotton pieces. Sew along the bottom of the vinyl on the right side of the fabric.

Step 4: Add Binding

Fold your 2-inch strip of cotton to make binding: fold in half and iron, then fold each edge to the center and press. Clip the binding to the top of the vinyl pocket and sew along both the top and bottom edges.

Step 5: Assemble Layers

Using the pattern guide, align the edge of the vinyl piece with the fold line on the pattern. Place the contrast B fabric (with interfacing) underneath the pocket layers, right side up.

Step 6: Create Divider

Sew a straight line from the bottom of the vinyl down through the fabric layers to create a separator for your fork and spoon.

Step 7: Add Backing

Place the second contrast B fabric piece (without interfacing) right side down on top of your layers. Clip in place. Trace the large pattern with tailor’s chalk and mark a gap for turning.

Step 8: Stitch Together

Sew along the chalk outline, leaving the turning gap open.

Step 9: Turn & Edge Stitch

Turn your project right-side out. Edge stitch around the entire pouch, closing the turning gap as you go.

Step 10: Add Snaps

Using the pattern guide, mark the snap placement. Poke a small hole through the fabric and vinyl, then attach the plastic snaps with your snap tool.

And you’re done! You now have a handmade silverware pouch that’s practical, washable, and reusable. These make wonderful gifts for teachers, kids heading back to school, or anyone who packs lunches regularly.
